Our Story
Who would have ever imagined that a husband and wife team making gingerbread houses out of their home in Stoneham, Massachusetts would have led to the now well-known Gingerbread Construction Company? John and Janet D’Orsi began making gingerbread houses and cookies at their home in 1981 as a hobby, planning only to sell the gingerbread houses and gingerbread cookies at craft shows in the New England area. Word spread about the delicious baked goods, and customers started showing up at their doorstep looking to try their products. John and Janet now knew that it was time to expand their company.
In December 1987, John and Janet took a leap of faith opening the first Gingerbread Construction Company store in a quiet Winchester, Massachusetts neighborhood. Knowing that seasonally popular gingerbread houses would not be enough to attract customers all year, John and Janet developed a sumptuous muffin line, as well as a gourmet cookie line. They started with only six varieties of the oversized, fresh baked muffins, but have since expanded their line to include nineteen varieties. These muffins have been recognized by Phantom Gourmet and won many awards for their delectable taste.
In 1995, the second location opened its doors in Wakefield, Massachusetts on Lake Quannapowitt. Because of its close proximity to Route 128, this location soon became the most popular store, growing to four times the size of the original Winchester location. The Wakefield location also became the company’s main construction site, taking on the task of baking and assembling all the company’s gingerbread houses and cookies. The Gingerbread Construction Company has become a household name for many northshore natives, though many have coined their own name for the unique bakery. The Gingerbread House, The Gingerbread Factory, and The Muffin House are just a few of the names used to refer to the company.
Since the creation of its online store, The Gingerbread Construction Company has expanded its customer base to include the entire US!
